Small and medium-sized buildings in the commercial and institutional sectors often lack the financial and technical resources to make energy improvements. NRCan’s ecoENERGY Retrofit Incentive for Buildings is a government program which was specifically created to help finance energy improvements for these buildings.

Organizations that own, manage or lease the following types of buildings can apply:

• Commercial and institutional buildings, including those owned by not-for-profit and religious organizations
• Provincial, territorial and municipal buildings
• Multi-unit residential buildings (with a common entrance and at least four storeys or a footprint of 600 square metres or more) or mixed-use commercial/residential buildings

Buildings must have been occupied for the last five years for a similar purpose. You can include multiple buildings in one project, but each must have an area no greater than 10,000 square metres (107,639 square feet). The organization must pay for the retrofit.
